Morgan Law is reviewing potential claims for men who took Viagra® and were subsequently diagnosed with melanoma. Viagra (generically known as sildenafil citrate) is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, and was first approved for sale in the United States in 1998. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that– although it accounts for less than 2 percent of skin cancer cases each year– makes up the majority of skin cancer deaths in the United States.

Potential Viagra Side Effects

The recent medical study Sildenafil Use and Increased Risk of Incident Melanoma in U.S. Men, published in the April 7, 2014 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that men who had used Viagra at any time had an increased risk of developing melanoma after adjusting for other risk factors (hazard ratio 1.92, 95% CI, 1.14-3.22). The medical study further reported that men who had recently used Viagra had a similar increased risk for developing melanoma (hazard ratio 1.84, 95% CI, 1.04-3.22). Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can be fatal if not detected in its early stages.

This recent medical study reported in JAMA was a prospective cohort study in which the study’s researchers analyzed a total of 25,848 men. The medical study reported that men who used Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction had an increased risk for developing melanoma when compared to men who had not used Viagra, even after controlling for factors such as family history of melanoma, sun exposure behavior and UV index in the state of residence. The medical study’s researchers reported that Viagra’s inhibition of PDE5 may potentially increase melanoma cell invasion.
